Cleaners and Hygiene Learnerships, 1st July 2007
A learnership on the NQF level 1 in Cleaning and Hygiene was introduced for 50 Deaf learners on the 1st of July 2007 by the Siyaya Institution at Selby. These learners received stipends from the Services SETA (Sector Education & Training Authority) as a joint venture between the Siyaya Institution, eDeaf and the Services SETA. A structured programme, incorporating both theoretical and workplace training, stretches over a one year period. Two hosting companies provided the practical training at the OR Tambo International Airport. They were AFHCO Building (6 Deaf employees) and Isikhonyane Cleaning Services (44 Deaf employees). Two eDeaf trainers were tutoring the Deaf learners in Sign Language, which is the Deaf learners’ first language. Siyaya and eDeaf trainers jointly provide training every Tuesday (group A) and Friday (group B).
By end of the June, the training will be completed and they will receive NQF 1 certificates, and hopefully they will then be permanently employed.
